Stability and Enhanced Functionality

On Thursday, 6 February, the demo of iteration 7 of the EduXS project took place. After every four-week iteration, an online demo is organised to present the project’s progress. This iteration focused primarily on improving stability and reliability. The session provided updates on governance, backend, and frontend developments.

Governance Milestone

A major milestone was achieved: EduXS is now officially part of The Commons Conservancy. This marks an important step in the formalisation of EduXS as an independent product. The Board of Directors has been established, with the following members:

  • Christien Bok – Innovation Manager of Education, SURF, The Netherlands
  • Oliver Janoschka – Managing Director, Hochschulforum Digitalisierung (HFD), Germany
  • Patrik Maltusch – Head of Enterprise Architecture, Aalto University, Finland
  • Vlad Petcu – Deputy General Administrative Director, UNITA – Universitas Montium

Additionally, the Advisory Board is scheduled to start in Q2 2025, while the Expert Group, responsible for content of EduXS, is forming, with around 12 members already committed.

Backend Update

Jan provided an update on backend developments, focusing on improving data synchronisation and system reliability.

  • Content Synchronisation – Full synchronisation of Baserow content to the EduXS database now runs nightly, ensuring up-to-date content.
  • Incremental Updates – Real-time synchronisation using webhooks is now in place.
  • Webhook Monitoring – A periodic job has been implemented to detect and reactivate deactivated webhooks, preventing unnoticed synchronisation failures.
  • MyAcademicID Integration – Technical implementation is complete, allowing users from European educational institutions to log in with their institutional accounts. Testing will begin once the final domain setup is ready.

Frontend Update

Robbert presented several frontend improvements, ensuring a more consistent user experience and better data visibility.

Key improvements:

  • Funding information is now displayed on the homepage and in search results.
  • Piwik Pro has been added to track user interactions and improve search engine visibility.
  • A new share button will enable sharing via QR code and short URLs.
  • The relationship view now opens in a pop-up rather than navigating away from the page.

EduXS in Interoperability Framework Recommendations?

Attendee Stefan Jahnke of the Knowledge Innovation Centre praised the progress made with EduXS and suggested its inclusion in the interoperability framework’s recommendations to the Commission. He noted that EduXS already provides many of the functionalities being proposed and could serve as an exemplary solution to avoid duplicated efforts.

Looking Ahead

The next iteration will continue to focus on:

  • Ensuring stability and reliability in preparation for a full release on 10 March 2025.
  • Support the implementation of the data entry and everything around it.

The next demo session is scheduled for 6 March 2025. Would you like to attend? Send a message to  info@eduxs.eu, and you’ll receive an invitation link.
